NYC DoorDash Update: Robots, Refunds, and the “Tip Later” Button

DoorDash is quietly rolling out a massive overhaul in New York City, driven by strict new labor laws. If you order tonight, you’ll notice two game-changing features.
1. The “Tip Later” Compromise

New NYC mandates require apps to show tipping options before you pay. To comply without scaring customers off with high totals, DoorDash has added a new “Tip Later” button. It gives you the flexibility to tip based on service, or skip the awkward pre-tip entirely.
2. The Robot Loophole (Tip Refunds!)
The biggest surprise is the new “Autonomous Vehicle Delivery” toggle.

- The Deal: You can opt-in to have a self-driving bot deliver your food.
- The Catch: You must go outside, meet the car, and unlock it with your phone within 10-15 minutes.
- The Win: If a robot matches your order, your tip is automatically refunded.
The Verdict
It’s no coincidence these features are launching together. As NYC enforces higher minimum wages for drivers, DoorDash is incentivizing delivery with robots to do the work themselves in exchange for customers saving money on tips. The future of delivery in Brooklyn is here: it’s cheaper, it’s robotic, and it requires you to put on shoes 😁. At least it’s not as bad as Instacart 😜.
